Briefly spared from the 1981 Defence Review, being reactivated to serve in the Falklands campaign, Stromness sailed south with a full complement of stores, as well as 429 men of 45 Commando RM. Refit in Gibraltar late in 1982 and transferred in April 1983 to the US Navy and renamed USNS Saturn (T-AFS 10). The ship was finally decommissioned on 1 July 2005 and was disposed of in a Sinkex by elements of the George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group on 27th October 2010.
