Hebe arrived at Malta on 9 July 1962 on completion of her first voyage from the UK. She was severely damaged by a fire, in Gibraltar on 30 November 1978. Most of the bridge and accommodation was destroyed, with one rating killed. Subsequent investigation showed the cause of the fire to be arson and a crew member was charged with arson and convicted. The RFA charter was cancelled in December and the ship was returned to the owners.
