Helicopter Support and Training Ship
Tonnages: 6384 gross, 2848 net, 4520 deadweight, 8950 full load displacement. Length overall: 424ft lin. Beam: 58ft Sin
Draught: 22ft lin Depth: 35ft 4in. Machinery: 5-cylinder Wallsend/Sulzer RD68 diesel engine, 5500bhp, single shaft
Speed: 16 knots. Aircraft: Support capability for 4 x Westland Wessex, or 2 x Westland Sea King, or 2 x Westland Wasp. Complement: 63 RFA, 32 RN + 131 training.
Builder Henry Robb. She replaced HMS Lofoten. Home port for Engadine was Portland for the whole of her career. During the Lebanon crisis of 1976, she was deployed as part of contingency plans to evacuate British citizens. She attended the Silver Jubilee fleet review on 28 June 1977, and took part in the Falklands campaign, during which she operated as a helicopter support and refuelling base in San Carlos Water. Engadine was taken out of service in March 1989 and laid up at Devonport. Sold to Greece 1990. Scrapped Alang 1997.
